Caltrans Commuter Alert-SR 99 Utility Work on Sunday

State of California • Department of Transportation

CALTRANS COMMUTER ALERT

Date: Wednesday January 6, 2016
District: 6 – Fresno, Madera, Kern, Kings and Tulare
Contact: Gloria Rodriguez (559) 444-2409

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATE ROUTE 99/MCKINLEY UTILITY WORK ON SUNDAY
WILL CAUSE DELAYS

The Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Granite Construction Co. and PG&E advise motorists last month’s utility work was postponed due to inclement weather. Operations have been rescheduled to take place SUNDAY morning, January 10th from 4:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route due to extended delays scheduled to take place during lower peak traffic counts along each direction of State Route (SR) 99 in Fresno County.

All northbound and southbound State Route 99 traffic will be stopped north and south of the McKinley Avenue overcrossing in order for PG&E to remove disconnected overhead power lines that currently transverse east and west over State Route 99. An exact time when PG&E will remove the power lines is dependent on initial operations taking place early Sunday morning. In partnership with the California Highway Patrol (CHP), traffic breaks for all vehicles will be conducted as follows: (Weather and schedule permitting)

  • A total of three (3) traffic breaks of both directions of State Route 99 traffic.
  • Traffic in each direction of travel will be stopped for 10 minute intervals.
  • After each interval, both directions of travel will reopen to traffic for approximately 10-minutes; followed each time by an additional traffic break of all traffic along SR 99.  (Total time of all intervals combined is estimated to be 1-hour in length).
  • On-ramps in the vicinity of this area will be closed/controlled by CHP during scheduled traffic breaks.

Commuters are reminded to pay close attention to road construction vehicles and personnel at all times. Additional CHP patrol units will be in force to provide extra traffic support during these operations.

Commuters are encouraged to avoid this area during this time frame or add additional time to their morning commute. Closures may continue for longer periods of time if necessary, due to delays caused by uncontrollable events that may occur during these type of operations.
